Australian Lunar Series III Gold Dragon Coin - 1/4 oz

The 2024 Australian Lunar Series III Year of the Dragon 1/4 oz gold coin was produced by The Perth Mint in Western Australia. Each coin contains 1/4 troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold and carries a legal tender face value of 25 Australian Dollars.

The Perth Mint introduced its first Lunar Gold Coin Series in 1996, drawing inspiration from the twelve animals of the ancient Chinese zodiac. Following the success of the original twelve-year program, Lunar Series II was launched in 2008, followed by Lunar Series III in 2020 with a new generation of designs. The continuation of the program into a third cycle reflects the enduring popularity of lunar-themed precious metal coins among investors and collectors around the world.

Perth Mint Lunar coins have developed a strong international following, particularly in Asian markets where the zodiac carries deep cultural significance. Their combination of precious metal content, annually changing artwork and association with each birth year's zodiac animal has also made them popular as gifts and keepsakes, in addition to their role as physical precious metal investments. The Perth Mint reported particularly strong demand for its previous Year of the Dragon coins in 2012 and high international interest ahead of the 2024 release.

The 2024 release celebrates the Year of the Dragon, the fifth animal in the twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle. The dragon holds exceptional significance in Chinese culture, where it is traditionally regarded as an auspicious symbol associated with power, wealth, success and good fortune. People born during Dragon years are said to possess qualities including bravery, ambition and intelligence. Recent Dragon years include 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 and 2024.

The reverse was designed by Perth Mint artist Ing Ing Jong and depicts a Chinese mythical dragon surrounded by stylised waves and fog, representing the dragon's traditional control over the elements. The design is accompanied by the Chinese character for dragon, the inscription DRAGON 2024 and a special "P125" mint mark, commemorating The Perth Mint's 125th anniversary in 2024.

The obverse features the Jody Clark Memorial Obverse of Queen Elizabeth II, supplemented by the dates of Her Majesty's reign, 1952–2022. The coin's weight, purity and monetary denomination also appear on the obverse. This memorial portrait distinguishes the 2024 Lunar Dragon from later Australian bullion releases bearing King Charles III.

Series III gold bullion coins have been issued in an extensive range of weights, including 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz, as well as larger denominations. The 1/4 oz format represents one of the smallest gold denomination in the range, providing an affordable way of owning physical Investment Precious Metals (IPM) in Singapore.
