The 2024 Australian Lunar Series III Year of the Dragon 1 oz gold coin was produced by The Perth Mint in Western Australia. Each coin contains 1 troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold and carries a legal tender face value of 100 Australian Dollars.
The Perth Mint introduced its first Lunar Gold Coin Series in 1996, drawing inspiration from the twelve animals of the ancient Chinese zodiac. The original Lunar Series I ran from 1996 to 2007, followed by Lunar Series II from 2008 to 2019. Following the success of these earlier collections, Lunar Series III was launched in 2020, continuing the tradition with a new generation of designs and making the Australian Lunar programme one of the longest-running modern precious metal collections based on the Chinese zodiac.
Perth Mint Lunar coins have developed a strong following internationally, particularly in Asian markets where the zodiac carries deep cultural significance. Their combination of precious metal content, annually changing artwork and association with each birth year's zodiac animal has also made them popular as gifts and keepsakes, in addition to their role as physical precious metal investments.
The 2024 release celebrates the Year of the Dragon, the fifth animal in the twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle and the only mythical creature among the twelve zodiac animals. In Chinese culture, the dragon is traditionally associated with power, strength, prosperity and good fortune. People born during Dragon years are said to possess qualities such as confidence, ambition, charisma, courage and determination. Dragon years up to this release include 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 and 2024.
The reverse was designed by Perth Mint artist Ing Ing Jong and depicts a traditional Chinese dragon surrounded by stylised waves and swirling fog, symbolising the mythical creature's command over the elements. The design is accompanied by the Chinese character for dragon, the inscription DRAGON 2024 and a special "P125" mint mark commemorating The Perth Mint's 125th anniversary in 2024. As with other releases in the collection, the artwork was created specifically for its respective lunar year, giving every zodiac issue a distinct appearance. The coin also incorporates a micro-laser engraved authentication feature, designed to make counterfeiting more difficult.
The obverse features Jody Clark's memorial effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the years of her reign, 1952–2022, together with the coin's weight, gold purity and monetary denomination. As Australian legal tender, the coin combines its 999.9 fine gold content with an official Australian dollar face value.
The 2024 Year of the Dragon 1 oz gold bullion coin was the fifth release of Australian Lunar Series III and had a maximum mintage of 30,000 pieces, with its entire allocation sold out at The Perth Mint. This mintage limit applies specifically to the standard 1 oz bullion issue, while other weights and Proof editions were issued under separate production arrangements.
For its 2024 release, Lunar Series III gold bullion coins were offered in denominations of 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz, as well as larger 2 oz, 10 oz and 1 kilogram pieces. The 1 oz format represents the standard one-ounce gold bullion denomination offered by The Perth Mint, providing investors with a popular and practical way of owning physical Investment Precious Metals (IPM) in Singapore.
