Australian Lunar Series II Gold Goat Coin - 1/4 oz

The 2015 Australian Lunar Series II Year of the Goat 1/4 oz gold coin was produced by The Perth Mint in Western Australia. Each coin contains 1/4 troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold and carries a legal tender face value of 25 Australian Dollars.

The Perth Mint introduced its first Lunar Gold Coin Series in 1996, drawing inspiration from the twelve animals of the ancient Chinese zodiac. Following the success of the original twelve-year program, Lunar Series II was launched in 2008 and continued the tradition with a new generation of designs. Its enduring popularity eventually led to Lunar Series III in 2020, making the Australian Lunar program one of the longest-running and best selling modern precious metal collections based on the Chinese zodiac.

Perth Mint Lunar coins have developed a strong following internationally, particularly in Asian markets where the zodiac carries deep cultural significance. Their combination of precious metal content, annually changing artwork and association with each birth year's zodiac animal has also made them popular as gifts and keepsakes, in addition to their role as physical precious metal investments.

The 2015 release celebrates the Year of the Goat, the eighth animal in the twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle. People born during Goat years are traditionally associated with qualities such as gentleness, kindness, creativity, compassion and harmony. Recent Goat years include 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 and 2015.

The reverse depicts a goat standing on a rocky hillside, with another goat resting nearby against a mountainous landscape. The design is accompanied by the Chinese character for goat, the inscription YEAR OF THE GOAT and The Perth Mint's traditional "P" mint mark. As with other releases in the collection, the artwork was created specifically for its respective lunar year, giving every zodiac issue a distinct appearance.

The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II together with the 2015 year-date and the coin's monetary denomination. As Australian legal tender, the coin combines its 999.9 fine gold content with an official Australian dollar face value.

Series II was struck in an extensive range of gold weights, from the smallest 1/20 oz denomination through 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz, as well as larger 2 oz, 10 oz and 1 kilogram pieces. The 1/4 oz format represents one of the smaller fractional gold denominations offered by The Perth Mint, providing an affordable way of owning physical Investment Precious Metals (IPM) in Singapore.
