The 2027 Australian Lunar Series III Year of the Goat 10 oz gold coin was produced by The Perth Mint in Western Australia. Each coin contains 10 troy ounces of 999.9 fine gold and carries a legal tender face value of 1,000 Australian Dollars.
The Perth Mint introduced its first Lunar Gold Coin Series in 1996, drawing inspiration from the twelve animals of the ancient Chinese zodiac. The original Lunar Series I ran from 1996 to 2007, followed by Lunar Series II from 2008 to 2019. Following the success of these earlier collections, Lunar Series III was launched in 2020, continuing the tradition with a new generation of designs and making the Australian Lunar programme one of the longest-running modern precious metal collections based on the Chinese zodiac.
Perth Mint Lunar coins have developed a strong following internationally, particularly in Asian markets where the zodiac carries deep cultural significance. Their combination of precious metal content, annually changing artwork and association with each birth year's zodiac animal has also made them popular as gifts and keepsakes, in addition to their role as physical precious metal investments.
The 2027 release celebrates the Year of the Goat, the eighth animal in the twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle. In Chinese culture, the goat is traditionally associated with peace, harmony, prosperity and good fortune. People born during Goat years are said to possess qualities such as gentleness, creativity, compassion, patience and resilience. Goat years up to this release include 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015 and 2027.
The reverse was designed by Perth Mint artist Wade Robinson and depicts a majestic goat standing proudly on a mountain plain, with rugged terrain and a solitary tree visible in the distance, symbolising strength, resilience and the animal's calm and determined nature. The design is accompanied by the Chinese character for goat, the inscription GOAT 2027 and The Perth Mint's traditional "P" mint mark. As with other releases in the collection, the artwork was created specifically for its respective lunar year, giving every zodiac issue a distinct appearance. The coin also incorporates a micro-laser engraved authentication feature, designed to make counterfeiting more difficult.
The obverse features Dan Thorne's effigy of King Charles III together with the coin's weight, gold purity and monetary denomination. As Australian legal tender, the coin combines its 999.9 fine gold content with an official Australian dollar face value.
For its 2027 release, Lunar Series III gold bullion coins were offered in denominations of 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz and 1 oz, as well as larger 2 oz and 10 oz pieces. The 10 oz format represents one of the larger gold bullion denominations offered by The Perth Mint in this series, providing investors with a more substantial piece of physical Investment Precious Metals (IPM) in Singapore.
