The 2027 Australian Lunar Series III Year of the Goat 1/20 oz gold coin was produced by The Perth Mint in Western Australia. Each coin contains 1/20 troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold and carries a legal tender face value of 5 Australian Dollars.
The Perth Mint introduced its first Lunar Gold Coin Series in 1996, drawing inspiration from the twelve animals of the ancient Chinese zodiac. Following the success of the original twelve-year program, Lunar Series II was launched in 2008, followed by Lunar Series III in 2020 with a new generation of designs. The continuation of the program into a third cycle reflects the enduring popularity of lunar-themed precious metal coins among investors and collectors around the world.
Perth Mint Lunar coins have developed a strong international following, particularly in Asian markets where the zodiac carries deep cultural significance. Their combination of precious metal content, annually changing artwork and association with each birth year's zodiac animal has also made them popular as gifts and keepsakes, in addition to their role as physical precious metal investments.
The 2027 release celebrates the Year of the Goat, the eighth animal in the twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle. According to tradition, the goat is associated with cooperation, perseverance and kindness. People born during Goat years are said to be gentle, creative and compassionate, with a calm and resilient nature. Recent Goat years include 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015 and 2027.
The reverse was designed by Perth Mint artist Wade Robinson and depicts a majestic goat standing proudly on a mountain plain, surrounded by rugged terrain with a solitary tree visible in the distance. The design also incorporates the Chinese character for goat, the inscription GOAT 2027 and The Perth Mint's "P" mint mark.
The obverse features Dan Thorne's effigy of King Charles III, together with the coin's weight, purity and monetary denomination. As Australian legal tender, the coin combines its 999.9 fine gold content with an official Australian dollar face value.
Series III gold bullion coins have been issued in an extensive range of weights, with the 2027 Goat available in 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 1 oz, 2 oz and 10 oz sizes. The 1/20 oz format represents the smallest gold denomination in the range, providing an affordable way of owning physical Investment Precious Metals (IPM) in Singapore.
