The British Gold Royal Tudor Beasts Bull of Clarence 1/4 oz gold coin is produced by The Royal Mint in the United Kingdom. Each coin contains 1/4 troy ounce of .9999 fine gold and carries a legal tender face value of £25. Struck to The Royal Mint's bullion standard, the coin combines investment-grade gold with a design inspired by Britain's Tudor royal heritage.
The Royal Tudor Beasts Collection was introduced by The Royal Mint in collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces and is inspired by the ten heraldic beasts that line the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace. These stone guardians represent the royal ancestry and dynastic union of King Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour, and were originally intended as powerful symbols of Tudor lineage and legitimacy.
The 2023 Bull of Clarence was the third release in The Royal Tudor Beasts bullion coin series. The Bull of Clarence is a historic heraldic symbol associated with the House of York, representing strength, power and wealth. Its association with the royal family can be traced to Lionel of Antwerp, the first Duke of Clarence and son of King Edward III, who used a black bull as his badge. Its inclusion among Henry VIII's Royal Beasts reflects the King's Yorkist ancestry.
The reverse was designed by British artist David Lawrence and depicts the powerful Bull of Clarence holding a shield bearing the Tudor Rose. The Tudor Rose combines the red rose of Lancaster with the white rose of York and symbolises the marriage of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, which united the rival Houses of Lancaster and York and established the Tudor dynasty.
The reverse also incorporates a chain mail surface animation background texture, providing the bullion coin with an additional visual security feature while complementing the medieval and heraldic character of the design. David Lawrence's interpretation was inspired by the stone beasts guarding the entrance to Hampton Court Palace.
The obverse features Martin Jennings' official coinage portrait of King Charles III. The 2023 Bull of Clarence holds additional significance within The Royal Tudor Beasts Collection as it was the first bullion coin in the series to feature the official coinage portrait of King Charles III, following earlier releases bearing the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
Over the years, Royal Tudor Beasts gold bullion coins have been issued mainly in 1/4 oz and 1 oz sizes. With their modern .9999 fine gold purity, distinctive heraldic designs and unique security features, Royal Tudor Beasts gold coins provide investors and collectors with different weight options for owning physical Investment Precious Metals (IPM) here in Singapore.
