The British Gold Royal Tudor Beasts Lion of England 1/4 oz gold coin is produced by The Royal Mint in the United Kingdom. Each coin contains 1/4 troy ounce of .9999 fine gold and carries a legal tender face value of £25. Struck to The Royal Mint's bullion standard, the coin combines investment-grade gold with a design inspired by Britain's Tudor royal heritage.
The Royal Tudor Beasts Collection was introduced by The Royal Mint in collaboration with Historic Royal Palaces and is inspired by the ten heraldic beasts that line the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace. These stone guardians represent the royal ancestry and dynastic union of King Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour, and were originally intended as powerful symbols of Tudor lineage and legitimacy.
The 2022 Lion of England was the first release in The Royal Tudor Beasts bullion coin series. The Lion of England is one of the oldest and most iconic beasts in English heraldry, first appearing on royal emblems during the twelfth century and becoming closely associated with the English monarchy. Representing strength, leadership and courage, the lion was chosen by Henry VIII as one of the heraldic beasts guarding the entrance to Hampton Court Palace, where the beasts proclaimed the King's royal ancestry and the legitimacy of the Tudor dynasty.
The reverse was designed by British artist David Lawrence and depicts the powerful Lion of England, inspired by the original stone beast standing on the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace. The lion is portrayed in an imposing heraldic form with a flowing mane, sharp claws and a royal crown, reflecting its traditional association with the English monarchy and its status as the 'king of the beasts'.
The reverse also incorporates a surface animation background texture, providing the bullion coin with an additional visual security feature while complementing the heraldic character of the design. The Royal Mint specifically identifies this surface animation as a secure background feature incorporated into the bullion design.
The obverse features Jody Clark's fifth definitive coinage portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, together with the coin's £25 face value. As the first bullion release in The Royal Tudor Beasts Collection, the 2022 Lion of England was issued during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and carries her final definitive coinage portrait.
Royal Tudor Beasts gold bullion coins have been issued in 1/4 oz and 1 oz sizes.
