The Singapore Mint 25th Anniversary of Independence S$250 gold coin was issued in 1990 to commemorate 25 years of Singapore's independence from Malaysia on 9 August 1965. Produced by The Singapore Mint, each coin contains 1 troy ounce of .9999 fine gold, equivalent to approximately 31.10 grams, and carries a legal tender face value of S$250. Struck to a Proof finish, this commemorative gold coin was issued with a maximum mintage of just 5,000 pieces.
Established in 1968, The Singapore Mint was originally founded to produce circulation coins for the newly independent nation and has since expanded into the production of commemorative and collectible coins. The 25th Anniversary of Independence commemorative coin programme celebrates Singapore's transformation from a newly independent nation into a rapidly developing international financial, commercial and maritime centre.
The obverse features the Singapore Coat of Arms, together with the year of issue, 1990, and the name Singapore represented in the country's four official languages – English, Malay, Chinese and Tamil. The national emblem symbolises Singapore's sovereignty, unity and independence.
The reverse features a stylised cityscape of Singapore's waterfront, together with a container ship representing the nation's development as a major international trading and shipping centre. The design incorporates the official 25th Anniversary logo and slogan, the commemorative dates 1965–1990, the inscription "TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE" and the S$250 denomination.
Struck to a Proof finish, the coin features carefully detailed designs with polished, mirror-like fields and contrasting frosted elements. Its limited maximum mintage of 5,000 pieces and historical significance have contributed to its appeal among collectors of Singapore commemorative gold coins.
The 1990 commemorative programme also included Singapore's first platinum coin, a S$500 Proof issue containing 1 troy ounce of .9995 fine platinum. Together with the gold, silver and base-metal commemorative issues, the collection celebrated a significant milestone in Singapore's history and reflected the nation's economic development during its first 25 years of independence.
Combining one troy ounce of .9999 fine gold with Singapore legal tender status and a design commemorating the nation's Silver Jubilee, the Singapore Mint 25th Anniversary of Independence gold coin offers investors and collectors an opportunity to own physical gold with a distinctive connection to Singapore's national history and heritage.
